As your family grows, it will inevitably outgrow the space you live in. However, moving to somewhere larger, (apart from any financial hurdles that may be in place) is often put back time and time again because the only thing more stressful than living in a cluttered house is packing the whole thing up and moving to another location.
The same is true for a business that has outgrown its humble start-up premises. The days are busy enough as it is without factoring moving to larger premises and all the headaches that go with it. Yet eventually, when there is hardly room to move, and the recently hired in helpers are practically sitting on top of each other, it’s time to bite the bullet and consider moving.
The stresses of moving home or business
Among the stresses involved with this level of upheaval is the fact that a team of strangers, no matter how professional they may be, are going to come in and take all of your possessions to a new location. They are going to be doing this in one day in a process that you will have little or no control over.
Anybody in this position would do well to look for any hints, tips, or ‘hacks’ to take back a bit of control and alleviate some of the stress. There is a wealth of information instantly available to anyone with access to the internet. Among the several million results that Google will throw up, several hundred, at least, advise you to use a storage facility.
Traditional storage is not always the answer
Of course, this immediately brings to mind visions of driving around town (or even having to visit the next town) finding somewhere to put some or all of your stuff. Then hiring a van and making several trips involving a lot of heavy lifting and just as much stress as actually moving.
A lot of the internet searches won’t tell you that rather than having to visit the storage unit, you can actually have a mobile storage unit brought to your home or workplace for you to fill at your leisure and then have taken to your new home or premises.
What is a mobile storage unit?
Mobile storage units may appear to resemble a standard shipping container at first glance but will typically have a much higher ‘spec’ than those you might see being loading onto a ship at the docks.
Exact specifications will vary according to which supplier you use. But, an established moving and mobile storage company like MI-BOX will have containers made from galvanized structural steel, so are anti-rust.
These will protect the unit’s contents against harsh weather conditions; they are weather tight and keep animals and insects from getting to your possessions. With these measures in place, your possessions are unlikely to be stolen from mobile storage units, which are available in various sizes according to the size of the move.
What sizes are mobile storage units?
There are three sizes most widely used for storage and moving:
· 20ft (20’ x 8’ x 8’) These can be used for moving an entire family home’s worth of stuff. However, if your expanding family has resulted in you using your loft space or basement for living purposes, you may need more than one of them.
· 16Ft (16’ x 8’ x 8’) This medium unit is used for storing or transporting the contents of a one or two-bedroom dwelling, like a smaller home or an apartment. This would also suit a business with a single office space.
· 8ft (8’ x 8’ x 8’) Not always used in-home moves, this smaller unit is often used for storing the contents of a dorm room, garage, or the entire contents of a single room during smaller renovations.
The benefits of a mobile storage unit
With a storage unit sitting on your drive, you are in greater control of the packing and moving process, and you are able to do it all at your own pace, around your other commitments, and not stop everything for a team of movers.
By ordering your unit a week before moving day, you can take the time to do things your way. Then it is collected using a process that ensures the contents are safe and level and transported safely to your destination, or stored if there are any hiccups in the moving process. Units can be stored outside, or if the contents are temperature sensitive, a facility to store in a temperature-controlled environment inside is usually available.
One of the biggest worries in the moving process is having to vacate your old home or premises, and then there is some sort of glitch, and you cannot move straight to your destination.
While this is far from ideal, knowing that your possessions are stored safely while all being sorted out gives you one less thing to worry about.
