People tend to believe that medieval food is everything but tasty and delicious. Potatoes, tomatoes, and chocolates didn’t exist back then. Naturally, one may think that old recipes are typically dull and bland. Then again, some old recipes contained robust flavors. If you were to add those aromas in today’s foods, then you wouldn’t be able to eat them. The kings and rulers of those days used to feast on the best recipes. Here are some of those dishes which you can cook at your home. You’ll realize that medieval food isn’t worth avoiding at all.

  1. Payn Ragoun: Prepare it by mixing some water, sugar, and honey. After that, you have to simmer the paste over low heat and then add ground ginger. Finally, you must add pine nuts to thicken it. Leave it to harden and cool it in a mold.

  2. Cormarve: The recipe is basically the serving of a large chunk of pork with a creamy sauce. You will need red wine, salt, caraway, ground pepper, garlic, and coriander to prepare the sauce. Roast the joint of pork in it, add the drippings and sauce to a stew and serve everything together.

  3. Funges: The ingredients include mushrooms, leeks, and spices combined in a broth. You’ll also require some saffron to add a splash of color to the recipe. The spice used in this dish is known as ‘powder fort.’ You’ll need twenty-eight grams each of cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger; seven grams of saffron, and 3.5 grams of cloves.

  1. Toastie: Begin by creating a mixture of red wine and honey in a saucepan. After that, you’ll add pepper, ginger, and salt to it. Keep cooking the mixture until it achieves a thick consistency. Use a spoon to dab the mixture over a piece of toasted bread. In the end, chop up some fresh ginger to sprinkle over the top.

  2. Poached eggs: You will need two eggs, some saffron, salt, sugar, and ginger. Start by whisking two egg yolks with the rest of the ingredients. Start cooking the mixture until it thickens while adding milk to it. Make sure that it doesn’t start to boil.

  4. Payn Fondew: Add some oil or grease in a pan and fry some bread slices. Mix red wine with egg whites and add spices like cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. You must also put some raisins and honey into it. Simmer the mixture until it thickens. Once it is ready, take the fried bread and add it in the syrup. Serve by sprinkling some sugar and coriander.

  2. Compost: Don’t worry; it isn’t what you need to fertilize your garden soil. Compost, the short form of ‘composition’ is the regal dish which was closest to what the peasants ate. You’ll need parsley roots, parsnips, cabbage, radishes, carrots, turnips, and pears. Cut all the ingredients in dices, boil them, and then put them in a large bowl. Cover it with almond milk and simmer for a while. Finally, add sugar and honey to it and let it achieve thickness.
