Is It Ever OK To Hide Money Or Bank Accounts From Your Spouse

Generally, most couples all over the world consider merging their financial lives once they commit to each other or get hitched. Also, others choose to maintain finances separately. If you belong to the second group, then your partner won’t care what you choose to do with your funds. This attitude is perfect, but only as long as you two are on the same page. However, there is a massive difference that separates managing your own money and hiding it from your partner. Not disclosing your financial actions is a form of deception. It doesn’t bode well for the relationship, as understood by financial counselors and psychologists.

Why people hide money from their partners

Several reasons instigate people to hide money from their spouses. Here are a few of them.

  • Some people prefer to maintain separate accounts because they don’t want to be financially dependent on their partners for any reason. Besides, individuals always try to keep some money aside that they can spend freely without worrying about it.
  • Some people maintain accounts secretly because they don’t trust their partner when it comes to spending money responsibly. Also, these people believe that their relationships won’t last long and they have to fall back on their own savings during times of crisis.
  • People hide their finances from their partners when their relationships suffer from problems, such as lack of commitment or trust. Maintaining secrecy regarding money or anything else won’t help to address or solve those problems.

Situations when you should hide your money

Indeed, you may face a few situations where hiding your money would prove beneficial to you. If you can’t recognize those moments, then you’ll be in trouble. Here are a few circumstances when you should maintain secrecy regarding your finances.

  • You must hide your financial information and the money itself when and if you’re in a relationship with an abuser. These infidels cause physical and psychological harm. They also tend to manipulate their victims and attempt to force them for money. Therefore, you need to be on your guard.
  • If you’re going to break up with your partner soon, then there is no point in sharing finances. It works for both married and unmarried couples. Besides, no rule exists anywhere that states married couples must share their money. So, if you know that your relationship will come to an end, you can hide your resources without hesitation.
  • You can also choose to hide information regarding finances if you’re planning to surprise your partner with a gift. Indeed, hiding money doesn’t always stem from troubled relationships.

Staying away from financial infidelity

Since every couple manages their finances differently, the key lies in sharing and involvement with each other’s financial means. You should lie to your partner or engage in other deceptive practices. Then again, maintaining transparency and opening up about finances doesn’t mean that you have to disclose every piece of information to your better half. If you have honorable intentions or fears, then you should discuss them with your partner.
