Finding a job can be a difficult task but resigning from it can be equally tricky. You have to do it in a way which enhances your professional image. Quitting your workplace doesn’t that you’ll argue with your employer. It is crucial that you maintain a proper relationship with your boss well into the future. Maybe you have negative feelings regarding your superior and the job itself. Then again, there is no point in making your employer feel good about your resignation. You must keep all doors of future opportunities open by building a relationship.
Prior notification
When you leave your job, the first person you inform is your boss. The individual belongs to the Human Resources department of the office. It is highly likely that your boss will ask for a resignation letter. The document is proof that you’re leaving the company on your own accord. It also proves that the company didn’t fire you or laid you off. Unless there is a positive reflection present, there is no reason for you to explain the reason behind your resignation. You must thank your superiors for all their support and help. You should also inform them that you learned a lot during your working days. There is no point in creating a divergent situation because it won’t gain you anything.
Be helpful
In most parts of the world, your employers will generate a two-week notice when resigning the job. You should speak to your boss about appointing a new worker at your post during the transition period. Your superior may not accept the offer, but it is a sign of courtesy. You can offer to train your successor or write down the operating procedures for the next one in line. Make sure that you fulfill all job commitments you made before walking out the front door. Introduce all customer and vendors to the new individual who acquires your post. You can also continue providing answers to queries to your company when you’re working at a different firm.
Follow the termination checklist
The termination checklist of employees informs you what the employers will cover while you resign. You can follow it to prepare yourself for the last day at the company. You should turn in all company-owned items and properties, like laptops, phones, badges, door keycards, keys, etc. You must prepare a list of queries regarding employee benefits, final paychecks, and more in advance. Make sure that you don’t forget anything important. Schedule a short meeting with the HR department to get the answers to all your questions. Also, ask your boss for a reference letter before leaving. You shouldn’t break off all contacts with your previous colleagues.
The exit interview
Yes, there is an exit interview, and you should consider participating in it. However, you have to be tactful while answering the questions. If you have ideas which can prove beneficial to future or existing employees, then share them. You shouldn’t use the exit interview to vent your anger. It isn’t worthwhile to complain about the treatment you received from your employers. The best time to share grievances is while you’re on the job, and not when you’re resigning from it.
Bid adieu professionally
Once you complete your two weeks of work before leaving, send an email to your boss and colleagues. Include your goodbye messages in that email and a statement about where you’re planning to close the chapter. Try to send a few emails personally too, with your phone number. After all, any one of your colleagues may need to contact you should the need arises. Don’t forget that your employer will disconnect your email and telephone lines on your final day. Try to work out an arrangement beforehand.
