How Facial Recognition became the Most Feared Technology in the US

Face recognition has become the most feared technology in the US because of the arising issue and concerns regarding its uses. It is certainly not limited to mobiles anymore in the country. It has invaded the general public place as well. Some cities have put a ban on this technology owing to its widespread use for various purposes.

Lack of Public Security

Face recognition uses the pictures or videos of people for analyzing their faces. Now this kind of technology when put to use threatens public safety in general. It is exposing the common man to the world in terms of personal security. Millions of faces are recognized through this technology to scan their faces for a lot of reasons. It is a severe issue in the domain of security.

Law Enforcement Agency requirements

The Law Enforcement agencies use this feature the most to identify the faces of criminals and match it with their records. While this may prove useful to them but it also may lead to incriminating a common man instead of the actual culprit who looks like him. So a lot of cities in America are banning such technology to safeguard its public going through such ordeals. It is a great tool to track criminals

Not a Democracy

It poses a threat to democracy in general. Most of the times, a common man may not be aware that he is undergoing scrutiny through this kind of a feature. And it is a breach of his privacy and also a violation of his rights. Laws are stating you cannot use anything against a person without his knowledge.

Misuse of technology

If such videos and photos reach the hands of terror organizations, they may misuse this against the country and put the safety of its people in danger. They may target specific people in the photos and manipulate them into committing some crime without their knowledge. During the process of face analysis, the common man will appear as a convict.

Panic to the Public

Unlike your mobile phones and computers, your face doesn’t have a shutdown mode. You cannot hide your face and walk in the public being in constant fear of being monitored by someone. The technology can be used by the law agencies to interrogate people just based on their suspicion. The person may not have anything to do with the crime.

Targeting Specific Communities

Face recognition may be used by the lawmakers to carry out vandalism against the black community and thus encourage racism. It can also be used to get even with certain people they have had disputes with in the past. They may also track certain criminals who have managed to get free by the judgment passed by the court.

Both sides of the Coin

Every technology invented to date has its good and bad points. The case of face recognition is also not an exception. While it can lead to the discovery of people who are violating the law, it can also investigate innocent people. Use of any technology to monitor people also becomes a subject of human rights. Here citizens have all the rights to take action against the conspirators.
