German Fashion: Is There More To German Style Than Socks And Sandals?

Do you have an idea about the German fashion style?

The world of German fashion is as diverse and vibrant as its dialects and landscape. Their fashion sense is not restricted to Lederhosen and blue overalls but extends to other varieties too.

A brief history

People all across the globe associate German clothing with bodices, frilly dresses, and suspenders, especially after catching glimpses of Oktoberfest. These items are no doubt components of German fashion in the traditional sense. However, the modern-day Germans prefer donning just like their counterparts in neighboring countries.

Glancing at the tone

In German culture, a lot of focus is placed on the need for wearing appropriate clothes as per the weather. They have a preference for conservative attire at their place of work and casual clothes at informal events. The business wear has a touch of conservatism. Men and women go in for dark-colored suits. Sometimes women wear dresses too.

Traditional clothing

You will get a fair idea about traditional German clothing if you take a look at Oktoberfest and other major international German festivals. In menswear, lederhosen or leather trousers are the preferred choices of working classes. The origin of lederhosen may be traced back to Southern Germany.

Practical style

With the passage of time, the popularity of the lederhosen grew, and aristocrat families embraced them towards the end of the nineteenth century. In the rural areas of this nation, the dirndl was the traditional dress worn by women. These clothes were commonly worn by women stationed in the southern parts before the nineteenth century.

Weather appropriate

The dress comprises of blouse or bodice, a skirt, and an apron. This traditional dress is made of fabric. The thickness varies with the prevailing weather and the time of the year. In the Black Forest area, women wear a bib as a covering to their bodice.

Daily wear

There are hardly a few residents who would dare to venture outdoors without wearing tights, coats, and jackets, especially during the months spanning from October to March. Rain jackets and waterproof trousers were known as regenhosen are often brought to school by students to meet an unforeseen emergency. Depending upon the severity of winter, snow boots and tights are worn as and when deemed necessary. In the spring season, people opt for contemporary clothing comprising of jeans and T-shirts.

Business attire

The tone of business attire is formal on all occasions, and it is observed during the summer months too. Visitors to this land have to keep this factor in mind. Obtaining the consent of their German hosts before their removal of warm layers of clothing is a necessary etiquette.

Cracking the fashion code

In the entire continent, Germany has one of the highest per capita GDPs. However, the annual spending on clothes of an average person is significantly lower than any of its neighboring countries. The market for clothing in this nation is extremely priced sensitive. Of late online shopping has occupied a prominent place.
