Coe College focuses on Mental Health during Freshmen Orientation

Mental health is something we don’t talk about often due to certain stigma associated with it. But it is as important as our physical health. It is often confused as being a lunatic or crazy, something that is not true. It essential to have mental wellness as a healthy body, resides in a healthy mind.

Transition Phase

It is essential to know about the mental health of the student when they come to college. Because of lot of things changes in their environment. This is the first time they step out of their homes. To ensure they are mentally stable while undergoing such changes is vital.

History of Abuse

Abuse, in any form, whether physical or mental can affect a person’s mind in more ways than one. It leaves a profound impact on them and makes them resort to drastic steps as feel guilty of the trauma caused to them. Inability to forget any kind of abuse takes a toll on the minds of youngsters.

Self Esteem

Low self-esteem can be one of the signs of being mentally ill. Not able to concentrate properly, not completing assignments on time can make a person underestimate his self-worth. Hence, this causes to have low self-esteem. It also leads to a pessimistic approach towards people and things in general.

The feeling of being loved

Children or adults need to feel the love from the people around them. It may be parents, siblings, friends, or spouse. This assures an individual that they are not alone and helps them face any situation with high confidence. So the feeling of being loved plays a decisive role in mental health.

Family Background

If you are from a broken family or witness hostility between your parents daily, it may impact your mental peace significantly. You possibly don’t gauge why the situation is like this and blame yourself. You often drift away from your parents or siblings and feel lost in your world.

Factors of Heredity

Mental illness can also, in some cases be the result of heredity. Anyone who is suffering or has suffered severe mental health can pass it onto the future generation through their genes. The gene pool is the result of genes from your immediate and extended family.

Loss of a close friend or relative

The loss of a close friend or relative can be unbearable at times. The realization of losing a support system you had, all of a sudden can lead to mental imbalance. The feeling of loneliness at this juncture adds more fuel to the fire.

Self – Harm

Many people have tendencies of self-harm like slitting wrists or commit suicide due to no apparent reason. Self-harm is an early sign that the person is not mentally sound. Such trends can also arise from a person’s inability to handle rejection or failure. Self-obsession may also contribute to harming oneself.

Today’s Lifestyle

The way of living in the 21st Century has changed drastically. It is fast-moving and fraught with stress and tension. Work stress, family, and financial stress are some of the factors causing mental illness. So work-life balance is the key to avoid stress and be mentally fit.
